I have been watching Alexander Albon extract genuinely remarkable results from that Williams all season and the mainstream F1 media keeps putting him in the 'good for Williams' box rather than the 'world-class driver' box. His lap in qualifying at Suzuka was two tenths quicker than anyone with equivalent machinery could have managed. His racecraft in wheel-to-wheel situations has been impeccable — zero incidents all season while routinely racing cars that have 30+ more points in the constructors. Williams are genuinely competitive now but even a slower car, Albon was extracting results that were forensically good. He deserves the conversation.

Suzuka rewards technical precision above almost every other circuit on the calendar and 2026 delivered exactly that. The C4 soft in 2026 is the most aggressive compound Pirelli have brought to a dry-condition race in years and I have mixed feelings. The first stint drama is excellent — nobody knows how many laps they can extract, strategies split 2-stop vs 3-stop, and the pit wall is guessing. But the delamination risk is real, we had two instances already, and a high-speed blowout is a catastrophic safety event waiting to happen. Pirelli say they're within limits. The teams are less sure. I want strategy chaos but not at the cost of someone hitting a barrier at 280km/h because their left rear let go without warning.

Two of those top fives came when at least four cars ahead retired or pitted under VSC. The pure pace data on Fridays puts them fourth or fifth, and Alonso's sector times show they're about 0.4s off Ferrari at circuit reference speed. This is a car that can capitalize on chaos brilliantly, which is a legitimate strategy, but let's not confuse opportunistic podiums with being a genuine title threat. Stroll's results specifically expose the car's limitations when things are clean.

Albert Park suits wheel-to-wheel racing in a way Monaco simply cannot — the long straights into slow corners create genuine overtaking opportunities rather than DRS parade passes. The 2026 tire compounds added a strategic layer where the two-stop undercut actually worked against cars on older rubber. If you watched Melbourne and came away bored, I genuinely don't know what you want from motorsport.

Every single year I tell myself I'll stay calm watching Jeddah and every single year I end up leaning forward at my screen yelling at barriers that are three inches from the track. 2026 was no different. The lap 1 incident at turn 4 reshuffled the entire field, the VSC period benefited exactly the wrong cars, and we ended up with a podium nobody predicted. What I love about Jeddah is that the tire management calculus changes completely when the safety car compresses the field. Strategy calls become desperate and chaos follows. Controversial circuit but brilliant entertainment.

Red Bull adapted fastest, no question. The new active aerodynamics system penalized teams that over-relied on passive downforce, and RB20-B's concept was almost purpose-built for it. Mercedes surprised me — their W16 actually found downforce in the mid-speed corners that their 2024 car hemorrhaged. Ferrari are third and honestly it feels like they compromised the concept to hit the weight limit early. Williams and Aston quietly jumped the midfield; Albon in particular is extracting something special. McLaren concern me — their car is fast in a straight line but loses too much in slow corners under the new regs.
